Becoming me – a QT*BIPoC weekend about change, identity, and new beginnings
Feeling, Keeping, Letting Go
Our identity is everything that makes us unique—and also what brings us together. But as queer BIPoC, it is, unfortunately, also something we often have to defend against the outside world.
That’s why we want to consciously create a safe space where, free from external expectations and labels, we can take a playful and appreciative look inward—a journey we’ll embark on together. Using creative tools like writing, collage, and singing, we’ll use the end of the year to ask ourselves: Who have I become this year? Who do I want to be next year?
Together, we’ll practice how to carry our bodies through the constant transformation of our lives and look to nature, which teaches us to celebrate change. A space for reflection and imagination—to feel, hold on to, and let go.
Together, we’ll explore what change can mean—through conversation, bodywork, creativity, community, and time for yourself.
What to expect: Creative activities, physical activities, nature, campfires, and community, free time, and connecting with other queer teens and young adults
Change is a part of life.
Some changes we choose for ourselves; others take us by surprise. This weekend, you’ll have the space to write and share your story(ies), meet new people, and look forward with anticipation to what lies ahead.
Workshop Facilitators:
avelicia (dey/dem)
I identify as mixed-race & light-skinned Black, non-binary, and queer. I currently live on a basic income, but I work as a poet and author and create healing spaces for queer BIPoC groups in Cologne. My life is enriched by the journey of my own healing process, by my community, by music and singing (including with the Black Choir Cologne), and by my deep connection to nature.
Cucuteni (she/her)
My life as a dark-skinned, queer/questioning, cis woman and mother moves between different worlds and cultures. As a poet and author, speaker, moderator, and community educator, I create spaces for connection, exchange, and shared growth. My art is shaped by my experiences as part of the Afro-diaspora and by the desire to tell stories that remind us, connect us, and open up new perspectives. I find strength in language, in nature, in community, and in the understanding that healing begins when we meet one another with honesty.
Awareness: Faryal (she/her)
I’m a queer, cisgender Afghan woman. I work, teach, and study in Heidelberg. I love plants, of which I have at least 100, plus the additional origami tulips I sometimes make. My activism centers on community care, empowerment, education, and awareness. I’m most passionate about working with kids and young adults.Furthermore, I’m part of Meltingpot Collective, a group of (diasporic) Asians who work towards creating spaces for people from all parts of Asia to share their cultures and celebrate them together.
